REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

Reproductive health deals with the reproductive processes, function, and system at all stages of life. Each person has the right to be well informed about reproductive health and to have access to safe, effective, affordable, and acceptable methods of control of their choice. In addition, an individual has the right to safe pregnancy and childbirth and to have the best chance of having a healthy infant.

Reproductive System functions to produce offspring and ensure survival of the species. An individual may live a long, healthy, and happy life without producing offspring, but if the species is to continue, at least some individuals must reproduce.

The reproductive system is a collection of internal and external organs — in both males and females — that work together for the purpose of procreating, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Due to its vital role in the survival of the species, many scientists argue that the reproductive system is among the most important systems in the entire body.

What are the four functions of the reproductive system?

  • To produce egg and sperm cells.
  • To transport and sustain these cells
  • To nurture the developing offspring.
  • To produce hormones.

These functions are divided between the primary and secondary, or accessory, reproductive organs. The primary reproductive organs, or gonads, consist of the ovaries and testes. These organs are responsible for producing the egg and sperm cells gametes), and hormones. These hormones function in the maturation of the reproductive system, the development of sexual characteristics, and regulation of the normal physiology of the reproductive system. All other organs, ducts, and glands in the reproductive system are considered secondary, or accessory, reproductive organs. These structures transport and sustain the gametes and nurture the developing offspring.

“TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE”

Materials: Drill board, Chalk

Mechanics: The teacher will read the statements. One of the statements is not true, and the two of them are true. Each team will huddle together and decide which of the three statements you think is a lie. Each group will write their answers on a drill board. If you think that the first statement is a lie, write 1. If you think it’s the second statement, write 2 and 3 if it’s the third statement.

a. (1) Reproductive health deals with the reproductive processes, function, and system at all stages of life.

    (2) An individual has the right to safe pregnancy and childbirth and to have the best chance of having a healthy infant.

    (3) Reproductive system is a network of cells, tissues and organs that work together to protect the body from infection.

b. (1) The primary reproductive organs produce gametes and hormones called gonads.

     (2) Reproductive health is a surgical process in which the baby is removed from the mother.

     (3) One of the functions of reproductive system is to produce egg and sperm cells.
